From Idea to Impact 6 Government Funding Schemes Powering Indian Innovation
India offers several government-backed programmes that help innovators, researchers, start-ups and MSMEs transform promising ideas into prototypes and commercially viable products. Depending on the programme, applicants may receive grants, incubation, mentoring, technical support and assistance with intellectual-property protection.
Eligibility requirements, funding limits and application windows can change. Founders should therefore confirm the latest conditions through the official government websites listed below.
1. DST–SEED Division
The Science for Equity, Empowerment and Development (SEED) Division operates under the Department of Science and Technology.
SEED supports science- and technology-based projects intended to improve the livelihoods and quality of life of disadvantaged communities. Its programmes are generally suitable for scientists, research institutions, technology organisations, NGOs and field-level organisations undertaking socially relevant projects.
SEED is not one general start-up grant offering a fixed amount to every founder. The funding, eligibility and application process depend upon the particular programme or call for proposals.

2. BIRAC Biotechnology Ignition Grant
The Biotechnology Ignition Grant (BIG) is BIRAC’s flagship early-stage funding programme for biotechnology innovation.
Successful applicants may receive grant-in-aid support of up to ₹50 lakh for 18 months to establish proof of concept and move an innovation closer to commercialisation.
The programme may support innovations involving:
- Healthcare and medical devices;
- Pharmaceuticals and drug delivery;
- Diagnostics;
- Agricultural biotechnology;
- Industrial and environmental biotechnology;
- Bioinformatics; and
- Other life-science technologies.
Calls for proposals are generally announced twice a year and are managed through authorised BIG partner incubators.

3. NIDHI–PRAYAS
The NIDHI–PRAYAS programme helps young innovators and start-ups convert technology-based ideas into working physical prototypes.
Eligible applicants may receive funding support of up to ₹10 lakh. Beneficiaries may also receive access to fabrication facilities, technical guidance, mentoring and industry connections through approved Technology Business Incubators.
The programme is sector-agnostic but is primarily intended for product-based technology innovations rather than ordinary trading or service businesses. Students, researchers, innovators, entrepreneurs and start-ups may apply through authorised NIDHI–PRAYAS centres.

4. MSME Innovative Scheme
The MSME Innovative Scheme combines incubation, design and intellectual-property support for Indian MSMEs and innovators.
Under its incubation component, financial assistance may be available for developing innovative ideas into commercially viable products. Government information indicates assistance of up to ₹15 lakh for developing and nurturing an approved idea.
Larger amounts may be provided to approved Host Institutions or Business Incubators for machinery, infrastructure and seed-capital support. Applications are generally routed through recognized Host Institutions rather than paid directly to every individual applicant.

5. MeitY TIDE 2.0
The Technology Incubation and Development of Entrepreneurs (TIDE 2.0) program was introduced by the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology to encourage technology entrepreneurship.
It focuses particularly on ICT start-ups working with emerging technologies such as:
- Artificial intelligence;
- Internet of Things;
- Blockchain;
- Robotics;
- Healthcare technology;
- Education technology;
- Financial inclusion;
- Clean technology; and
- Transportation and infrastructure technology.
Government scheme material describes support of up to ₹4 lakh for idea-to-proof-of-concept work, up to ₹7 lakh for prototype development, and investment support of up to ₹40 lakh for product development and market outreach, subject to the applicable conditions.
Because the original approval period stated an end date of January 31, 2024, applicants should confirm whether a current call is available through MeitY Startup Hub or one of the listed incubation centers.

6. DRDO Technology Development Fund
The Technology Development Fund (TDF) is an initiative of the Ministry of Defence implemented by the Defence Research and Development Organisation. It is not administered by DST.
TDF supports the indigenous development of defence and dual-use technologies by Indian industries, particularly start-ups and MSMEs. Its focus areas may include:
- Artificial intelligence and cybersecurity;
- Avionics and aerospace systems;
- Robotics and unmanned systems;
- Secure communications;
- Semiconductors and electronic systems;
- Advanced materials;
- Naval technologies; and
- Energy and defence technologies.
TDF is not a general-purpose start-up grant. Funding is normally connected to specific defence-technology requirements and project calls. Applicants should also carefully review the intellectual-property provisions because successful development may result in joint ownership of project-generated IP with DRDO.

Protect Your Intellectual Property Before Applying
Government funding can accelerate innovation, but founders should protect their intellectual property before disclosing detailed technical information.
An appropriate IP strategy may include:
- Conducting a patentability search;
- Filing a provisional or complete patent application before public disclosure;
- Confirming ownership among founders, employees, consultants and research institutions;
- Reviewing grant conditions concerning background IP, project-generated IP and licensing rights;
- Registering trademarks for the product and business name; and
- Maintaining confidential development records, drawings and test results.
Submitting a grant application does not itself provide patent protection. If the application requires disclosure of the invention’s technical details, the innovator should first consider whether a patent filing or confidentiality arrangement is necessary.
How Logicize IP Can Help
Logicize IP does not provide funding or grant-application services. We assist innovators, start-ups, research institutions and MSMEs in protecting, licensing and commercialising the intellectual property developed through their innovation projects.
Our services include:
- Patentability and prior-art searches;
- Provisional and complete patent drafting;
- Indian, PCT and international patent filings;
- International trademark and industrial-design protection;
- Freedom-to-operate and infringement analysis;
- IP ownership, assignment and licensing agreements;
- Technology-transfer and commercialization support;
- International IP portfolio development and management; and
- Global filing and prosecution coordination through qualified local associates.
Securing funding can help an innovation reach the development stage, but an effective IP strategy is essential for protecting its commercial value. Logicize IP helps innovators secure ownership, expand protection internationally, structure licensing opportunities and prepare their IP portfolios for commercialization and global market entry.
Disclaimer: Funding limits, eligibility requirements, and application periods may change. Applicants should verify the latest guidelines and open calls through the respective government websites before applying.
