GI Portal India: How the New e-Filing Portal Speeds Up GI Registration
On 15 September 2026 (GI Day), the DPIIT Secretary launched the GI portal, officially the GI e-Filing Portal. You can access it here: online.ipindia.gov.in/eGir/login. The Controller General’s office also published Draft Guidelines for filing GI applications. Here’s what the GI portal offers and where it can save time.
What is the GI portal?
It’s the official platform for filing Geographical Indication applications online with the GI Registry. The portal supports different user roles (including applicants and legal representatives) specific account types are defined in the portal and draft guidelines.
How to file on the GI portal
- Register and verify with an OTP.
- Log in. The dashboard has New Application, Drafted Forms, and Payments.
- Pick the form: GI-1A (Indian, single class), GI-1B (foreign, single class), GI-1C (Indian, multiple class), or GI-1D (foreign, multiple class).
- Fill it in English or Hindi. The portal auto-transliterates into the other language.
- Upload the required supporting documents (typically including specification, map, proof of origin, method of production, uniqueness statement, inspection-body details, and affidavits) as PDFs within the portal’s size limits.
- Preview and e-Sign with Aadhaar.
- Pay. The fee is calculated automatically, and you can pay by card or UPI.
- You get an acknowledgement, and the application number arrives by SMS or email.
Why the GI portal is useful
- One place for everything. Filing, payment, saved drafts and tracking all sit in one dashboard.
- Built-in checklist. Mandatory uploads make it harder to miss a document.
- Bilingual forms. Producer groups can work in Hindi.
- Online tracking. You no longer chase status by post or phone.
- Open to foreign applicants. Forms 1B and 1D cover convention applications.
Can the GI portal make GI registration faster?
Partly. The GI portal speeds up filing and the early administrative stage. It does not shorten the statutory steps. Examination by the GI Registry, publication in the Geographical Indications Journal, and the three‑month opposition window all remain. Where the draft guidelines refer to a Consultative Group, its role is advisory. It does not replace the Registrar’s examination or alter the statutory timelines.
